A performance based scholarship for outstanding candidates was among the highlights of an education intervention announced by the Shehu ABG Foundation in Kaduna State, as 3,000 students received full sponsorship for the 2026 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination.
Shehu ABG, a former member of the House of Representatives and Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant in Kaduna State, confirmed that the scheme targets students from poor families across all 23 local government areas of the state, with the foundation bearing the full cost of registration for each beneficiary.
For candidates who perform exceptionally well, ABG revealed that the support would extend well beyond the examination. “Students who excel in the examination will enjoy full sponsorship from 100 level through graduation. We want to reward excellence and encourage healthy academic competition across the wards,” he disclosed.
The former lawmaker, who personally visited registration centres on Friday to ensure the process remained transparent and free of irregularities, explained that the initiative was born out of concern for students being shut out of tertiary education for financial reasons.
“We have seen a disturbing trend where bright and hardworking students are unable to register for JAMB simply because their parents cannot afford the fees. This intervention is not about politics. It is about securing the future of our children and ensuring that poverty does not deny them the opportunity to pursue higher education,” he noted.
ABG highlighted the significant harm caused by neglecting education at the grassroots level. “Education remains the most reliable tool for social mobility. If we neglect the academic future of these young ones, we are indirectly deepening poverty and inequality in our society,” he added.
Reflecting on the responsibilities that come with privilege, he urged leaders to do more for the current generation. “Many of us are products of a system that supported public education. It is our responsibility to extend the same support to this generation so they can compete favourably and contribute meaningfully to society,” he stated.
Parents and guardians at various registration centres welcomed the gesture, describing it as a lifeline for families struggling under the weight of Nigeria’s current economic conditions.
