The National Business and Technical Examinations Board and the National Examinations Council have set up a joint technical committee to better align their operations and work together more closely within Nigeria’s public examination system.
This decision came after a meeting between NABTEB’s Registrar, Dr Aminu Mohammed, and NECO’s Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi, at NECO’s headquarters in Minna. Both leaders and their teams discussed ways to improve how exams are run and to achieve common goals.
Mr Uchechukwu Olisah, NABTEB’s Assistant Director for Media and Protocol, disclosed this in a statement released on Friday in Benin.
Dr Mohammed stressed the critical role of collaboration among examination bodies in driving national development. He described the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen institutional partnerships through knowledge sharing and mutual learning.
The NABTEB Registrar advocated for expanded coordination among all examination bodies in Nigeria, including the West African Examinations Council and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies, whilst acknowledging that each organisation operates under distinct mandates.
Professor Wushishi welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant milestone in institutional cooperation between the two examination bodies. He noted that NABTEB’s visit demonstrated strong institutional goodwill and expressed NECO’s commitment to renewed collaboration.
The newly formed technical committee comprises 10 members, with five representatives from each organisation. The committee has been tasked with developing operational frameworks, harmonising examination strategies, and recommending implementation approaches to the chief executives of both institutions.
This collaboration comes at a crucial time for Nigeria’s examination sector, which continues to face various operational and financial challenges. The partnership between NABTEB and NECO is expected to promote efficiency, reduce duplication of efforts, and establish standardised practices across the public examination landscape.
The move signals a proactive approach by both examination bodies to address systemic challenges whilst improving service delivery to candidates and educational institutions nationwide. Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the initiative as a positive step towards creating a more coordinated and effective examination system in Nigeria.
