Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a coordinator of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, with examination materials recovered from his possession.

Eric Nwombu was apprehended on 14 April 2026 by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Safe School Initiative attached to the Anambra State Police Command, following a report that he had been collecting 2026 UTME examination slips from students at a cyber cafe in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

Anambra State Police spokesperson, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, noting that Nwombu faced charges of criminal impersonation and unlawful possession of JAMB examination materials.

Items recovered from the suspect included eight JAMB examination slips and an exercise book containing the names and examination numbers of students, which he could not satisfactorily account for.

Ikenga revealed that when initially questioned at the computer centre, Nwombu claimed to be a JAMB 2026 coordinator in Atani. Staff at the centre, unconvinced by his response and uncomfortable with his conduct, contacted police operatives in the area.

“On sighting the operatives approaching, the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended,” Ikenga stated.

The spokesperson added that a preliminary investigation had commenced and that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further inquiry.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police without delay.

The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding the conduct of the 2026 UTME, with authorities intensifying efforts to clamp down on examination malpractice across the country.
